Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Arizona University, 2012.
It is hypothesized that the student body composition at U.S. universities is increasing in enrollment of non-traditional students, a category which includes the parent-student. However, current quantitative research isolating parent-students, or those students raising children while attending the university, was scarce and insufficient to substantiate the hypothesis.

This exploratory research lays a foundation for further study regarding parent-student enrollment and retention by describing the complex make up of the parent-student, identifying some barriers they face in obtaining an undergraduate degree at a four-year university, and suggesting ways in which a university could respond to parent-student needs.

Using mixed-methods research, the study collected and reported data from ten, self-selected, parent-student interviewees who gave insight into their particular academic backgrounds and university experiences with available resources. Through this new area of research, we gain a better understanding of their specific challenges and suggest ways to promote and develop resources for parent-students.
