Production and comprehension of affectively intoned prosody has been attributed to right, non-dominant hemisphere functions in dextrals and many sinistrals. However, it is currently unclear whether the right hemisphere is dominant for processing only emotive characteristics of prosody or for other non-affective features as well. This study systematically investigated the right hemisphere's role in comprehension of linguistic aspects of speech prosody, independent of emotive content. Specifically, two experimental tasks were designed to investigate the comprehension of suprasegmental linguistic features denoted by changes in syllable stress and intonation.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Eighteen acute brain lesioned adults were studied, nine non-aphasic right hemisphere lesioned patients (RHL) and nine aphasic left hemisphere lesioned patients (LHL). Nine non-brain damaged adults matched to RHL patients for race, age, sex and education served as controls. RHL and LHL patients were administered the Western Aphasia Battery to demonstrate the absence or presence of aphasia. In addition, all groups were given two experimental tasks to assess comprehension of non-segmental linguistic changes denoted by stress and intonation patterns. Experiment I assessed comprehension of grammatical form class changes denoted by stress. Experiment II investigated comprehension of linguistic information marked by changes in intonation contours.

A two-way analysis of variance, with repeated measures was performed for each experiment. Results indicated that in general on the stress tasks RHL and LHL group performance was not significantly different from each other. In addition, on each condition the RHL group was statistically significantly different from controls. On the intonation tasks RHL and LHL groups were statistically significantly different from each other with RHL patients performing worse than LHL patients.

The poor performance of the non-aphasic RHL patients on the experimental tasks lends support to the hypothesis that the non-dominant right hemisphere plays a prominent role in the interpretation of linguistic as well as non-linguistic aspects of speech prosody. In the case of linguistic prosody, it appears that the contribution of the right hemisphere is greatest in the processing of non-segmental prosodic features such as intonation.
