Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2013.
What the American higher education system is now, it once was not. It is undeniable that learning institutions have come a long way in terms of racial inclusion. In the present day, people from different backgrounds come into contact with one another at college campuses around the nation. Considering the historical transformation from a racially limiting educational system to multicultural campuses today, an analysis of current perceptions within classrooms across various racial groupings benefits our understanding of the racial campus climate. This study was designed to manipulate teacher race in both high and low immediacy scenarios to examine the outlooks of various instructor races under the conditions of homophily, credibility, and student motivation. Respondents were 504 undergraduate students (221 males, 281 females, and 2 unidentified) enrolled in a variety of communication courses at a western university. After reading hypothetical scenarios of teachers engaging in highly immediate or nonimmediate behaviors students reported perceptions of the teachers. The results of the analysis of variance and correlations were significant with consideration to likeness between a teacher and student, the instructor's ability to maintain a positive ethos, and the effect race can have on student drive.
