Domestic violence in the United States has become a major concern in that practitioners and clinicians are seeking ways to end this devastating phenomenon. The impact that incomes have on the decisions to leave abusive relationships is unknown. This study will develop an understanding of the effect of income on victims of intimate partner violence through a collection of responses from women who have left abusive relationships, are currently residing in domestic violence shelters, and also from women who left abusive relationships but never sought assistance. Rusbult & Martz (1995) Investment Scale, Hendy, Eggen, Gustitus, McLeod, & Ng (2003) Decision to Leave Scale, and Straus, Hamby, Boney-McCoy, & Sugarman (1996) Conflict Tactic Scale were employed to examine the survivors' responses as they relate to the impact of income on their decision to leave. This quantitative study found that financial concerns were not a deciding factor alone when making the decision to leave abusive relationships. Victim's of domestic violence make a determination among several variables that are important to them at the time of their departure. Financial concerns, social support and alternatives were factors in whether women remained in or exited abusive relationships.
