"Military Humour" has been described variously as everything from military mirth to fighters' folly. Scores of Canadian works depicting soldiers' humour have appeared since World War Two. The Opus Major is probably Herbie, Canada's "every man" citizen soldier by Sergeant Bing Coughlin and Captain J. D. MacFarlane. Other classic works include Earl Birney's Turvey, two complementary works by Farley Mowat entitled The Regiment and And No Birds Sang, and H. F. Woods' The Private War of Jacket Coates. John Mimms along with Ray Stevens have also written two more recent but no less funny books called Spam Medal Heroes and The Harps of War , respectively. Barry Broadfoot in his Six War Years 1939--1945 and Joyce Hibbert in her Fragments of War also added many humourous wartime oral histories from Canadians across the country. Even Pierre Berton got into the act in his witty Starting Out.

Cartoons and songs were a valuable weather vane of the soldiers' version of solace during wartime. Anthony Hopkins, Songs from the Front and Rear was the best source I found for harmonizing Herbies. Bing Coughlin's cartoons from my perspective were by far the funniest and most representative, along with the work of John Mimms and Eric Mansikka.

The aim of this study is to examine humourous Canadian military literature and explore both its conceptual structure and how Canadian cultural history relates to that structure. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
