Coarticulation patterns and variability in concurrent babbling and words were investigated using the acoustic-based locus equation metric. Voiced stop consonant-vowel productions, grouped as babble or words, were analyzed in ten children, ages 17--21 months. Measurements of the second formant (F2) onset and the F2 vowel frequencies were placed into regression analyses to obtain locus equation statistics of slopes, y-intercepts, standard error of estimates (SE) and R2s for each stop place of articulation. A repeated measures ANOVA for slopes revealed contrastive slopes for velars, but not for bilabials vs. alveolars. A repeated measures ANOVA for y-intercepts revealed contrastive slopes for alveolars but not for velars vs. bilabials. A repeated measures ANOVA for SE revealed no differences between babble and words and across place of articulation. Statistical analysis revealed no group differences between babble and words for slope and y-intercept. These results were compared to locus equations obtained from other infants, three-to five-year old children and adults. Children who are under two years of age have different coaticulation patterns and higher coarticulation variability than adults.

A secondary focus of the study examined variability of coarticulation and its relationship to lexicon development. Correlations were obtained for SEs and vocabulary measures of traditional Type Token Ratio (TTR), modified TTR and the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory for each voiced stop place of articulation. No statistical relationships were observed, although velar coarticulation variability increases demonstrated a relationship with traditional TTR increases.

In summary, the locus equation metric proved to be an important descriptor of coarticulation for babble and words. Implications for the continuity model, speech motor constraints, holistic hypothesis and the relationship between coarticulation variability and lexicon development were discussed.
