The proper role of charity and the right way to organize community service are controversial questions. While the arguments often cite tradition, few efforts have been undertaken that relate historical examples of charity to service learning. None systematically examine what high school students have been taught about charity in the past.

Exploring how charitable activity has been portrayed in high school American history textbooks can help us understand what has been taught and may help account for our different concepts and attitudes.

Beginning with a comparative analysis approach, this study examines stories about different kinds of charitable activity as they were presented to different generations of students. Textbook selection was based on documentation in previous studies and other evidence of their use, with attention to distribution by publication date (1930--1995), author and publisher.

Using techniques from grounded theory, findings were linked to information about history, curriculum, charity and volunteering, and service learning. The result is a portrait of charitable activity as students and teachers encountered it, plus a sense of what accounts for it and what its significance has been.

A common portrait of organized charitable activity emerged with textbooks of the late 1930s. With variations in detail, its basic outline has changed little. It includes six examples from Reconstruction through the Progressive Era, each of them identified with an individual. The story ends with the coming of the New Deal, and charity's failure to meet the challenges of the Depression.

Differences occur from one textbook to another, but few reflect changed perceptions of charity. Instead, examples are called on to illustrate the inclusion of minorities and women, popular support for foreign policy and other themes.

The literatures of historical study, education, and nonprofit studies all suggest factors that help account for textbook treatment of charity being limited. These include changes in the ways academic historians approach their craft, developments affecting the publication and adoption of textbooks, and the late emergence of charitable activity as an area of study.

Broader social and intellectual factors also appear to contribute, and these warrant further attention.
