Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of learning patterns among adults who are deaf. An emphasis was placed on how the deaf participants viewed their experiences and how these experiences impacted their learning. The focus of the study targeted two separate groups of individuals in order to contrast and compare their responses. These two groups were persons who were deaf and employed and persons who were deaf and were unemployed. The study utilized a qualitative design and utilized the logic of inter-rater reliability. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 20 participants who all utilized American Sign Language as their major mode of communication. Qualitative data were obtained through the use of open-ended questions in the interviews. Demographic data were also collected through the use of the videotaped interviews. The videotaped interviews were transcribed, analyzed, and coded according to themes. Data analysis was used to obtain findings and results.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions. The findings of the study were arranged into three areas: Giving Voice, Deaf Life, and Adult Learning. Each area was dedicated to the responses in the interviews that detailed specific categories that provided insight into the participant's individual lives, families, Deaf culture, and diverse learning experiences. Conclusions and recommendations were drawn and related to two main concept areas. These two concept areas were: Deaf community and adult learning. It was found that consistency of language instruction as well as early intervention was imperative for language acquisition. Early exposure to other individuals who are deaf is necessary for development of a healthy self-identity. In addition, deaf adults apply the standard adult learning principles to their lives as do the hearing population. However, many deaf adults have missed out on important learning how to learn skills that impact their success in employment as well as in everyday learning situations.
