Stories about `Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr, his brother, Mus&dotbelow;`ab, and their roles in the contest over the caliphate during the second civil war are used in this study to examine how later Muslims remembered particular figures and events from early Islamic history. A number of issues about Islamic historical memory are raised: the tendentiousness, authenticity and factuality of accounts from the early historical tradition; the impact that transmission conventions, scholarly norms, religio-political commitments and pragmatic considerations had on historical memory as transmitted in texts; the malleability and usefulness of historical memory for addressing troubling contradictions between the remembered past and later Sunni piety, and for shoring up sectarian religious identity in general. In the first chapter, competing accounts about the character and legacy of `Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr are used to explore the issues of the nature, provenance, and reliability of historical accounts, and how best to mine them for information. In the second chapter, the focus shifts to the question of the causes and effects of omissions from historical narratives. Specifically, that question is posed about the Zubayrid cause as treated in the History of al-T&dotbelow;abari. In the third chapter, maqatil or death scenes, a particularly evocative genre of historical accounts, are examined to show how they were used by historians to address issues that vexed historical memory. Chief among these issues was the contradiction between Sunni reverence for the Companions, and the fact that those very Companions repeatedly fought bloody wars over leadership. In the final chapter, the issue of how orally-transmitted historical memory was manipulated to express and solidify sectarian identity in popular commemorations of the Zubayrids between the 4th/10th and 12th/18th centuries is treated, with consideration of the relationship between popular and scholar historical traditions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Various factors shaped Islamic historical thought at different stages, for different reasons, and with different effects on the textual tradition. When one understands how the textual tradition was affected by certain of these factors and resisted the impact of others, one can use the textual historical sources with increased discernment and greater confidence.
