Virtual Enterprise is an experiential workplace simulation in which students operate virtual businesses. Students perform various business functions to trade virtual products and services in a closed worldwide network of over four thousand similar firms. The program uses constructivist, active learning strategies to permit students to "experience" business, not through the use of a business administration text, but by engaging in business practice through the management and operation of simulated businesses.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The literature review done for this study places Virtual Enterprise in a continuum of thought that includes experiential learning, constructivism, problem-based learning and the school-to-career movement. A previous study found that students experienced a series of learning outcomes as a result of their participation in the program.

The study focuses on students' perceptions of learning outcomes in Virtual Enterprise. Using a mixed methodology of surveys and focus group interviews, the study found remarkable consistency in the perceptions of students, that they make progress in the identified learning outcomes and, in so doing, develop the content knowledge and personal development skills that enhance their preparation for the world of work. They also agree with the literature which indicates that active learning strategies are effective and, as a result, they perceive the program to be a vehicle for active student engagement and a viable strategy for business and career education.
