Current Japanese students who are studying at American universities enjoy their freedom and choices in their lives much more than ever before. This is true that even though female students have many more limitations in their life options in terms of their educational careers and marriageable age, so that their decisions reflect various social pressure. Those of genders want to have more equal relationships and to have a much more family-oriented life style which middle class American families enjoy in which they share child-rearing and housework. Japanese students are not sure if this is a possibility for them in current Japanese society, where husbands work long hours. In this context, they never had to question the competitive educational system in which a mother's important role as a supporter on children's education is emphasized, since they did not experience the same academic pressure when they came to the U.S. to study at universities that had no difficult entrance exams. The Japanese-exam-oriented educational system, based on meritocracy and its egalitarianism, provide the nation with equal opportunity to go up the ladder of success without social class distinctions. Therefore, the educational career is always emphasized as the mother's role as educational supporters for their children is valued in the current Japanese society.Subjects--Topical Terms:

On the one hand, female students yearn to be respected as individuals in society and want to establish their own self-identity through professional careers. On the other hand, they know that it is difficult to expect American feminism to take root in Japanese society because of the Japanese language culture and the absence of husbands at home. Moreover, they think that American feminism ignores the physical differences between men and women, and so do not totally agree with its ideas. Male students feel threatened by the ideas of American feminism and individualism, because they know that it would be very difficult for them to share housework and child-rearing responsibilities after the long hours of work. They also fear the growing instability and insecurity of marriages if their wives start working, because their wives will be financially secure to live by themselves. Moreover, their male identity through a professional career will be threatened if they do not have their wives' support in the home. This is especially true when the vertical relationship between senior-workers and inferior-workers in Japanese companies makes the competition among co-workers harder. Even though those of genders are put in a difficult position of having to work out the problems concerning gender roles in current Japanese society, they still want to change to a better way for their own generation, and want their own children to have more opportunities and choices in life than they themselves had.
