The questionnaire was mailed to hotel/motel managers and asked them to rate their perceptions of the importance of the workplace basics competencies needed by their entry level and middle-management employees. They were also asked to answer questions focusing on information pertinent to the study. The hypotheses were tested using a two factor design with repeated measures on one factor, a split-plot design. This was completed by using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) procedures.

Findings. There was a significant difference between the mean scores of the importance ratings of workplace basics competencies needed by entry level employees and the middle-management employees in the hotel/motel industry. The importance of workplace basics competencies were perceived to be higher for middle-managers than entry level employees in all five domains. In addition, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of importance ratings of workplace basics competencies when hotel/motel managers were classified by years of management experience. Less experienced managers (1-10 years of experience) rated all five domains higher in importance than did more experienced managers (11-40 years of experience).

Conclusions. To the extent that data are valid and reliable, the following conclusions are warranted: (a) education and training for middle-management vs. entry level employees in the hotel/motel industry must be more intense and carried to higher levels of competency in the areas of: resources, information, interpersonal skills, systems, and technology; (b) less experienced managers hiring employees in the hotel/motel industry expect higher levels of workplace skills.
