Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 2003.
This thesis is a critical re-examination of the primary goal and the knowledge objectives of the current high school social studies program of studies in Alberta using philosophies from the past and present. My objective in this thesis has been to ascertain whether the knowledge objectives of the Alberta Senior High Social Studies Program are reflective of the primary goal of the program. To answer this question the philosophies of Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, John Dewey, and Charles Taylor were used develop a comprehensive understanding of the primary goal of the 2000 Alberta social studies curriculum guide and, using that understanding, the primary goal was compared to the knowledge objectives.
