Thesis (Ph.D.)--Graduate Theological Union, 1998.
This dissertation is a narrative examination of religious community in relation to regional landscape through a study of the Finnish American Unitarian movement in northeast Minnesota, 1910-1950. Place is defined here as the interactive combination of physical locale, human social networks, and experiential sense of place. The thesis is that narrative accounts of the relationship between religious community and place can further our understandings of the complex relationship between religion, nature and culture. Such understandings are seen as critical in the development of locally based environmental ethics.

The narrative begins with a description of the geographical development of the Mesabi Iron Range. Of particular importance is change in the physical and human landscape due to lumbering and iron ore mining. The history of the Unitarian congregations is discussed in the context of the region and of the Finnish American community, historically divided between Lutherans and socialists. The Unitarian project was to create a place in the middle territory. The dissertation explores the dynamics of placemaking within immigrant religious communities.

Local theology and religious ethics are discussed in relationship to two Regionalist altarpiece paintings from the 1930s, using the manuscripts of the Reverends Risto and Milma Lappala for interpretive guidance. The first painting intertwines pilgrimage themes in liberal Unitarian Christianity with the immigrant experiences of the congregation. The altarpiece is seen as depicting movement through placelessness towards a new homeland. The second painting depicts a Finnish immigrant family overlooking a stylized regional landscape. An immigrant family aspiration cycle is identified as embedded in the landscape. Interpretation of the painting includes discussion of the traditional Finnish attitudes towards nature and the linkage of those attitudes with American Unitarian views.

The category of place is seen as efficacious for illustrating and concretizing various relationships between religion, nature and culture. Recommendations are included for adapting the project for congregational use. Also discussed are implications for the study of denominational history, theology and the practice of earth-related spirituality and environmental ethics.
