Thesis (M.Ed.)--York University (Canada), 2002.
This thesis examines dance as an effective teaching tool for extending students' understanding of the Torah. I have been developing a Torah-Dance programme for Grade One students at an arts-based Jewish Day school in Toronto. I became interested in researching how dance might encourage students to engage in interpretive studies of the Torah in a manner similar to the midrashic methods developed by the ancient rabbis. I also wanted to explore how dance depth of understanding symbolic meaning. As a practitioner-researcher, I have undertaken the examination of these queries in this thesis.

The history of Torah and Midrash are surveyed in order to identify how the responses of students who utilize dance to study Torah are similar to the ancient methods of the rabbis. Contemporary reading theories are also reviewed to better understand how ancient rabbis investigated biblical text. The methods the rabbis employed bears much resemblance to the way in which contemporary scholars believe readers create meaning from text. Research on dance and movement education suggests that students learn best by experiencing the world. I also explore research on the effectiveness of dance as an educative tool to demonstrate how this may be applied to Torah studies.

I taught and researched Grade One students who participated in Chumash (Torah) Dance classes once a week for the duration of one school year. I observed, videoed, photographed and interviewed the students to discover how utilizing dance in Torah studies affected their understanding of and attitudes toward the Torah. The findings suggest that “Dancing the Torah” may help students: (1) Utilize midrashic techniques, similar to those of the ancient rabbis; (2) Recall and sequence narrative events; (3) Develop
