The purpose of the study was to examine effects of pet-facilitated therapy (PFT) on social/interactive behaviors of autistic children. The study utilized an ABAB single-subject design consisting of nine 25-minute sessions, with and without a dog. Five subjects, ages 5-12, diagnosed with moderate-severe autism, were assessed via an observational coding procedure in four behavioral categories: social negative, social verbal, social nonverbal, and reciprocal interaction.

Overall, all children displayed dramatic progress in their ability to initiate/engage in social interaction with both dog and therapist. The dog appeared to serve as a catalyst in generalizing the children's social interaction and affection toward the therapist. As therapy progressed, it appeared the dog, combined with the therapist's interaction style and PFT activities, helped to increase all of the children's reciprocal interaction, participation, arousal levels, attention span, and affect while decreasing their isolative, aggressive, and preservative behaviors.
