Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2004.
Respiratory therapists (RT) need to "consistently demonstrate critical thinking skills in the application of cardiorespiratory care" (College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario [CRTO], 1999). Currently there are learners that do not possess the ability to critically think at the level required by the profession and are subsequently not successful. It is important to graduate increasing numbers of therapists to respond to expected growth in the profession due to deteriorating air quality, increasing lung disease, together with an enlarging population. The time to address this situation is now. My research concludes that all graduates will require increasing emphasis on critical thinking behaviours. With this trend in site, an early intervention strategy is the key to increasing graduate numbers.
