Among career centers in American universities, the evolution of the "career networking" philosophical orientation has inevitably produced varied ideas about the structure and goals of the career networking model. To what degree that shift has favored the newer career networking model has been a source of repeated investigation since the early 1990's.

This study determined the philosophical orientation of career centers and career professionals at the colleges and universities in the United Sates among the membership of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) by assessing their position in the Career Center Paradigm (i.e., job placement, career planning, career networking) as defined by Casella (1990). Determining trends among career centers has made it possible to determine whether centers are effectively matching their organization and orientation to current needs of their constituents.

775 randomly selected directors of careers centers at colleges and universities nationwide were sent these letters introducing them to the research and asking them to complete the survey via the Internet, as expeditiously as possible (see Appendix C). In the survey, participants were asked 50 questions relating to their office's environment. All responses were captured and stored on the university's server which later will be processed for data analysis.

The survey results confirmed the progression toward the career networking model. The lack of historical data prohibits comparison research. This study determined that the following variables and their descriptions are of major concern to the career professionals who are trying to use every available resource at their institution. Nationally, there is flexibility within review each variable and tables 1--13 you will witness the close proximity the results. Review of the data indicate the basic mission for career services is still dominated in career planning, with a small incremental movement toward the career networking model.

Career services are transitioning toward adopting the career networking model, and more centers seemed to be organizing themselves using a centralized model with satellites which utilize the career networking model. This study has determined that the trend of the career networking model indeed continues into the new century, with its foundation centered within the constructivist theory.
