The findings of the study show that both screening instruments are capable of being utilized efficiently in a physician's office, based on criteria determined in the second chapter of the study. It also appears that the accurate identification of children for further evaluation, for both of the screening instruments, is similar. Because of limited numbers of participants, findings could not be inferred to any population other than the sixteen children involved in the study. As a preliminary study the number of participants was adequate and this thesis provides a case for further research to support early identification of children with autism. This thesis was written to increase awareness of the importance of early identification of autism and to provide a study of autism screening instruments with the potential for efficient use in pediatrician's offices. The purpose of this study was to evaluate two recently developed screening instruments, the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers and the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test 2nd Revision, and compare their effectiveness in identifying children with autistic characteristics to the child's actual diagnosis, as well as to evaluate the ability of the instruments to be used efficiently by a physician or other healthcare personnel at a well child office visit.

520 $a This study included sixteen participants who were between the ages of 18 and 35 months. Eight of the participants were given the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) and eight of the participants were given the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test 2nd Revision (PDDST-II). Following their participation in the screening test the participants completed a diagnostic evaluation at the Weisskopff Center for the Evaluation of Children. The results of the screening test were compared to the diagnosis the child received. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the accuracy of identification between the two screening instruments.
