This dissertation examined the experience of adults visiting a small New England art gallery and described their views on visiting galleries, viewing art, and selecting paintings. This multi-layered study focused on three major areas of inquiry: (1) "hesitation" while visiting galleries and engaging with works of art; (2) the dimension of "hesitation" engaging with works of art; and (3) the effects of emotional connections and psychological issues and judging paintings.

Using a Qualitative Multi-Level Interview framework and observation, questionnaires, and interview methods, the study investigated visitors' attitudes about visiting galleries, engaging with works of art, and choosing most and least favorite paintings in order to understand how galleries can inform the general public about art. Over nearly 20 years of operating galleries, I have come to realize that many who visit galleries and engage in conversations about art seem uncomfortable. The study helped to understand that adults, who had little or no exposure to cultural environments as youngsters and limited formal art educational background, had set out to educate themselves about art and made considerable effort to feel less hesitant in engaging with art. The study also highlighted the value of finding personal experiences reflected in works of art, while visitors also had difficulty identifying abstract works with their elusive meaning. Implications and recommendations for educators and gallery personnel included the need to teach about art, especially abstract expressionist art, so that personal or societal issues in such works can be understood and be made more relevant. Only when the public is informed about art will it take on meaning and become a part of everyday living.
