520 $a It is the intent of the writer that through this combination of teaching and learning experiences, the end products will be employees and a writer who are more competent and compassionate; who will continue to seek both knowledge and empathy; who recognize that some pain may be unavoidable, and sometimes even therapeutic, but who recognize also that unnecessary pain may be destructive, that kindness also may be therapeutic, end who therefore seek to alleviate rather than aggravate the destructive fear, anxiety and loneliness that may accompany both mental illness and the treatment thereof.
520 $a Becoming a psychiatric technician requires the practice of psychiatry through nursing care, communicating skills, and the implementation of the numerous and varied therapies prescribed by the psychiatrist that fall in the job description of a psychiatric technician. The psychiatric technician receives his training through the inservice education department in order to develop the nursing care skills and understand the duties and responsibilities needed to care for the patient adequately and safely. The welfare and safety of the patient is the chief concern of the psychiatric technician, the team member who gives most of the direct nursing care. The importance of observing, reporting, and recording patient symptoms and behavior cannot be stressed too much, since one major contribution the technician can make is to keep other team members informed of the patient's welfare, progress, and behavior. This information guides the treatment team in determining the best treatment plan for the patient. The technician must always be eager to cooperate and communicate with the members of the hospital treatment team. This cooperative attitude on his part brings about a cohesiveness among the other team members. The therapeutic process is then carried out most effectively.
