The use of art textbook is a new trend in the field of art education. School districts throughout Ohio are adopting or purchasing art textbooks for the art curriculum. The purpose of this descriptive survey research study was to (1) discover ways in which the art textbook was used by a population of 64 selected elementary classroom teachers and selected elementary, middle and high school art teachers who participated in Year Two of the Ohio Partnership for the Visual Arts Regional Institute for Educators; and to (2) discover whether or not the textbook was viewed as valuable by the teachers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Six research questions were answered primarily through the use of a 21-item, self-administered questionnaire and tangentially through the use of a small sample of interviews. The 21-item questionnaire was a modified version of the 30-item pilot study questionnaire designed by the researcher with a reliability coefficient of r =.95. The research questions included: (1) what percentage of elementary classroom teachers and elementary, middle and high school art teachers use the art textbook?; (2) what text(s) is (are) being used?; (3) how are the texts being used?; (4) how often are the textbooks used in the art curriculum?; (5) what are the reasons for using that particular text?; and (6) how valuable is the text viewed by the elementary classroom teacher and the elementary, middle and high school art teacher?

It was discovered that almost all of the teachers use the art textbook they were provided. The majority of elementary classroom teachers and elementary art teachers used Discover Art by Chapman; a majority of the middle school art teachers used Understanding and Creating Art by Goldstein; and almost all of the high school art teachers used Discovering Art History by Brommer. A majority of the teachers used some of the lessons from the art textbooks in an order determined by the teachers rather than the textbook author. A majority of teachers used the art textbooks during every other art lesson for the visuals and the content. The art textbook was viewed as very useful by a large majority of the teachers. Further research is needed on the successful and unsuccessful uses of the art textbook and on the education preservice teachers receive regarding the use of art textbooks in the curriculum.
