Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2004.
The purpose of this research was to identify information technology (IT) positions within Mississippi agribusiness. The research followed a descriptive-correlational design. Data were based on a 12 question mailed instrument sent to 508 Mississippi agribusinesses in January 2004. Data shows that the majority of Mississippi agribusinesses have 20 or fewer employees, consider themselves agricultural service providers, conduct business both inside and outside of the state, and are headquartered in Mississippi. Of the 238 respondents, 257 individual IT positions were identified. The majority did not employ an IT worker(s) and did not outsource IT needs. Agribusinesses perceive a high school education is enough formal preparation with IT experience. The results show several significant relationships between agribusiness demographics and IT occupations at the p < .05 level. Small agribusiness service providers were more likely to employ computer programmers and database administrators and outsource IT needs. Small agribusiness also valued IT experience/expertise more than formal education.
