Description of pathological voice quality and quantification of its severity is important to better understand patients' complaints and to help in the management of voice disorders. Two general approaches, subjective and objective, for the assessment of voice quality are generally recognized. Due to a number of reasons the correlations between subjective and objective measures of voice quality are generally very low. The goal of this research was to investigate the acoustic cues that lead to the perception of breathiness. In addition, this research used an auditory model to determine whether perceptual ratings of breathiness could be better explained by estimating the internal representation of the vocal acoustic spectrum.

Two experiments were conducted in the study. In the first experiment, listeners were asked to rate the similarity of breathiness of voice stimuli presented in pairs. A multidimensional scaling solution was obtained for these ratings. In the second experiment, an auditory model was used to obtain the internal representation of the voice stimuli. Measures calculated from this representation were then compared to the multidimensional scaling solution obtained in the first experiment. Results of these experiments show that a two-dimensional solution provided the best fitting model to explain the variance in the perceptual ratings of breathiness. These dimensions were related to periodic energy in the low frequency region and the aperiodic energy in the high frequency region, respectively. The use of an auditory model provided objective measures that accounted for a much greater proportion of the variance in perceptual ratings than conventionally used acoustic measures.
