The veve and the kalacakra mandala are sacred drawings used in Vodoun and Tantric initiation rituals. These drawings are consistently misidentified as magic, non-empirical, esoteric, non-sacred aesthetic or magico-religious phenomena. This dissertation asserts that these drawings have a transformational ritual function and assume a metaphysical system which includes different states of consciousness. The discipline of psychoanalytic art therapy is employed to analyze a comparative study of the psychoaesthetic dynamics of the African diaspora veve and the Namygal kalacakra mandala drawings in order to establish the transformational character of these drawings.

The pscyhoaesthetic dynamic field of the drawings are studied in relationship to the psychoaesthetic dynamics of figure-ground relationships, drawing construction and materials, the H-T-P (house tree person) projective tool, the line design, symbolic content, client-image-therapist dynamic field and ritual context. Concluding from this analysis, this dissertation asserts that the psychoanalytic art therapy analysis presents similar complex transformational structures and processes in the creation and use of the veve and kalacakra drawings.

These drawings are identification, familiarization, acknowledgment and disposal ritual stages within the initiation rituals. Their function is to symbolize and teach the prescriptive cosmologies of their respective Vodoun and Tantric Buddhist sacred traditions; to evoke a liminal ritual state in the initiate, guide and community; and to serve as a transformational ritual in the assimilation stage of the initiation in which moral and psychological life cycle issues are resolved. This dissertation concludes by defining the veve and kalacakra mandala drawings as sacred transformational ritual phenomena.
