Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2005.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether training focused on project management core competencies could have a significant impact on developing successful project managers for the life sciences industry and to identify effective training methods. If such training was found to be effective, then the study also sought to identify how universities and learning institutions could advance the quasi-profession of project management. Finally, the study examined whether there existed a set of basic and advanced project management core competencies that were required for project management certification. The results of this study indicated that there is a reluctance on the part of the project managers to become certified. Since certification requires the students to pass an exam and continue to take educational credits to maintain their certification, those project managers that had been performing in this position for several years were less motivated to become certified. However, the research indicated that training is beneficial in developing successful project managers regardless of the type of training; formal, informal, or on-the-job. The research indicated that there is a need for basic and advanced training. There was consensus on the basic training modules but not on the advanced training modules.
