Thesis (Ph.D.)--Drew University, 1990.
This work argues that Thornwell's ecclesiology was motivated by his concern over the nature and exercise of church power because of his appreciation for the office of Christ as "Head" and "King" over the Church. It also argues further that his concept of the "spirituality of the Church" was not a new doctrine devised by him.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Thornwell's ecclesiology is viewed within its Southern and American contexts, as well as its Continental Reformed tradition. This work is a general introduction to his ecclesiology, treating matters such as polity, worship, doctrine, discipline, the mission of the church, the church in relation to the state (government) and to society.

Included are discussions of Thornwell's views on the internal relations of the church respecting elders, deacons, calling of the minister, ordination and church boards; his teaching upon the sacraments, preaching, the offering, use of vows, use of creeds and the Westminster Standards, Scripture and "Common Sense" philosophy, the discipline of non communicant members, definition of an offense, and the power of investigation by church courts. This work addresses Thornwell's understanding of the church in its external relations in matters such as education, slavery, and benevolent causes.

This investigation concludes that Thornwell's ecclesiology was a carefully constructed traditional Presbyterianism, informed by the Scottish Second Book of Discipline, that set forth a clear conception of the nature and mission of the church; that his doctrine of the church contains constructive insights, insights which could be beneficial to the life and ministry of any contemporary denomination whether it is Presbyterian or not.

Since, for the most part, Thornwell has not been treated kindly by contemporary scholarship because of his stance on slavery, and since his life and influence are largely unknown to the non specialist, an introductory chapter on his life and ministry has been included. This South Carolina Old School Presbyterian may have been the most influential theologian-educator produced by the Old South; to study his life and thought provides a valuable path into the intellectual life and thought of that place and time.
