John R. Rice (1895-1980) was an important transitional figure in American Fundamentalism, providing continuity between the revivalism of Billy Sunday and Bob Jones, Sr., and later Fundamentalists such as Jerry Falwell. Rice founded in 1934 and edited until his death The Sword of the Lord, a weekly paper that several scholars have identified as the leading Fundamentalist periodical of the 1940s and 1950s.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Despite Rice's importance, little scholarly attention has been paid him. He is mentioned in passing in a number of dissertations that focus on other figures; only one writer--dealing principally with Billy Graham--has done significant research on The Sword. The only extant biography of Rice is a hagiography produced by one of his admirers.

This study supplies a basic biography of Rice, demonstrating that his was a "moderate" Fundamentalism. This position is developed by examining Rice's controversies with J. Frank Norris in the 1930s, with Billy Graham in the 1950s, and with Bob Jones University in the 1970s.

The study examines the theology of revivalism that Rice and his associates followed during the period 1934-1955. Topic considered include Biblical inerrancy, dispensationalism, sin, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and conversion itself. The research shows that Rice significantly altered John Nelson Darby's dispensational scheme, yielding a far less dogmatic position on Israel than that obtaining in Fundamentalist circles in the 1980s.

The study continues with a discussion of Fundamentalism's responses to the New Deal, World War II, and anti-Semitism, again during the period 1934-1955. Referring to the work of historians George M. Marsden and Leo P. Ribuffo, it is shown that John R. Rice and other conservatives seldom framed their critique of culture from a fringe perspective. To the contrary, their comments on FDR, the war, and other issues betray an ambivalent relationship to the cultural mainstream. While Fundamentalists distanced themselves in some ways from American society, in others they mirrored almost perfectly the attitudes prevailing on Main Street. Rice's transition from strict isolationist in the late 1930s to celebrant of America's war effort after Pearl Harbor is particularly telling.
