Thesis (Th.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 1989.
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the textual relationships of the extant Matthew papyri. The primary reason for this investigation was the acceptance of the Claremont Profile Method and the quantitative analysis methods of text typing manuscripts. A new understanding of the history of the text of the Greek New Testament has led to the need to re-examine the accepted classification of all early manuscripts.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter One consists of a historical survey of manuscript classification methods in three sections. The first section dealt with the early period of modern textual criticism. The second section dealt with those scholars who used a genealogical method of textual criticism. The third section dealt with scholars who use an analytical approach to textual criticism.

Chapter Two presented a critique of current text-typing methods. The issues that a text-critical method must address were discussed. A text-critical method was proposed for use in describing the nature of the text contained in fragmentary manuscripts of limited content.

Chapter Four consists of a proposed method of presenting the results of a quantitative analysis in a graphic format. The proposed method would replace the genealogical tree with a method of showing percent agreement without implying chronological sequence.

The results of this study indicated that the Matthew papyri originated during a time when the text of the Gospel of Matthew had not settled into any standard form. The textual affinities of these papyri tend to support the theory of a late development of the text types. In conclusion manuscripts that date prior to the fourth century should be cited in critical editions of the Greek New Testament and used for the evaluation of variant readings but not as members of any established manuscript group.
