Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2004.
"Learning In Mono, Living in Stereo" examines the intersections, potential and realized, between the fields of media literacy and liberatory education. The seminal work of Paulo Freire is examined, along with the work of educators, reformists, and theorists who have adapted and expanded Freire's theories and practices. The goal of education has dramatically been altered from forming citizens capable of critically participating in a democracy to education serving to train students to participate in a capitalist society. In order to be truly reformed, the goals of our educational system must first be examined and re-imagined. This thesis will argue that media education is an essential component of any education with liberatory goals in the 21 st century. It will further suggest that the fields of media literacy and liberatory education are perfectly paired. With similar goals and methods---as well as confronted by similar barriers---an exploration of these two fields will allow for practices to be developed which can strengthen both. Existing programs in both fields are examined and best practices (both systemic and programmatic) are suggested.
