Thesis (Ph.D.)--Drew University, 1989.
Harriet Beecher Stowe's emphasis on love and communion with God contributed to American nineteenth-century romantic evangelicalism. This thesis develops the themes of her romanticism and her evangelicalism by examining her novels, relevant letters, and appropriate secondary sources. The dilemmas raised by her evangelical heritage coupled with a severe form of New England theology Stowe solved by her gospel of love and her concept of aspiring conversion.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Harriet Beecher Stowe's emphasis on love and communion with God contributed to American nineteenth-century romantic evangelicalism. Stowe developed her concept of "the enthusiam of love" particularly for those who had been influenced by severe New England theology. In her view there was a divinely ordained "ladder to heaven" which led from human affection to the vision of God. Initial love to God was facilitated by loving or being loved by another person. When one recognized and felt deeply God's love, one had "enthusiasm," God in one, and the true vision of God. The vision of God led to communion with Christ by sharing his sufferings. This in turn led to further acts of love to God and neighbor, to evangelism and social reform.

Stowe reacted against the theological tradition which overemphasized sin, responsibility, and the judgmental sovereignty of God. For example, one New England divine taught that only one in ten thousand persons would be saved. Stowe thought the church had lost the means of grace since its theology kept people from God. She advocated a more positive view of human and divine nature. Christ's work had opened salvation to anyone who desired it. Pre-conversion "aspiring to God's presence" then could be attributed to God's drawing an individual, and not merely to sinful self-interest. Her piety fueled her evangelism.

Stowe emphasized Christian nurture in the home and inclusive practices in the church. She desired to free the gospel from its doctrinal accretions and to proclaim it universally. In her piety the deep sense of Christ's abiding presence was more important for true Christianity than experiencing conversion or affirming doctrines. Christ's presence then empowered the Christian for holy living both in the home and in society.
