This study began with the question: How do young students understand and represent stories when they are engaged in the creation of sequential art? Theoretically, it drew on the narrative and sequential art literature. Methodologically, it involved a nine month qualitative study of fifth grade students in an ethnically diverse, low income public school. Findings showed that most students understood concepts of sequential art, such as perspective and expressions, but that they had trouble with complex concepts such as curvilinear perspective or five point perspective. Case studies showed that some low skilled writers and readers were able to produce more coherent narratives by revising their work. Another finding was that students often incorporated characters or plots from popular culture, but transformed them in original ways. The children who didn't use popular culture characters or plots in their sequential art productions often used real people that they knew. Finally, some students who were labeled as low skilled in school literacy were able to use minimal text in complex ways and draw diverse and complex perspective angles in their art. The findings suggest that sequential art may be a way for students who are skilled in art but struggling with literacy to demonstrate their strengths while building their writing skills.
