520 $a Twenty-nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with evaluators, instructional designers, deans or directors of corporate universities, instructors/trainers, advisors, and department managers at four corporate universities to determine how evaluation information is being utilized and to identify factors that influence this use. Document review and observational evidence were also collected at each site to clarify information obtained through the interviews and to help achieve the study's objectives.
520 $a The data obtained through the interviews, document review, and observations were content-analyzed to identity trends and patterns that existed in individual sites as well as among the four corporate universities. To determine influential factors impacting use in the four sites, a meta-analytic conceptual framework developed by Cousins and Leithwood (1986) was used. This study's findings illustrate that training program evaluation results are being used by multiple individuals both from within the corporate universities, as well as throughout the entire organizations in which these entities are housed, for a number of key purposes. While the majority of these purposes are instrumental in nature, several examples of both conceptual and symbolic use were cited by participants. The seven major factors found to impact the use of evaluation results in the four corporate universities include: communication quality; timeliness; commitment and/ or receptiveness to evaluation; evaluation quality; credibility; relevance; and, findings.
