Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Pittsburgh, 2003.
Numerous studies over the past fifteen years have explored both the foodways of ancient Greece and the cultural capital that certain foods or dining practices possess within that culture. Knowing the value ascribed to specific foodstuffs and culinary activities within a culture often allows a reader a deeper appreciation of a text in which episodes of eating are ubiquitous or occur at pivotal points within the narrative. If we know, for example, that eel is an expensive treat for an ancient Athenian, we might see how the purchasing or even the discussion of eels highlights a play's celebratory closing. Moreover, if we are sensitive to mentions of food and dining throughout a particular play, we may see that a playwright uses cooking, for example, as a metaphor for the political process. In this case, appreciating the role of the culinary within the play's criticism and correction of society's troubles leads to a fuller understanding of both what the comedy is about and of how it creates meaning.

Although other scholarly works have examined the role of food in Aristophanic comedy, they have done so in order to reconstruct how the Greeks obtained food and felt about their diet. In other words, the episodes of food and dining in the comedies were used to give modern scholars a sense of the society's values or an appreciation for the prominence of food across the whole genre of ancient comedy. This dissertation explores the role of food and dining within the extant comedies of Aristophanes. In particular, it discusses how Aristophanes uses instances of food and dining in order to affect the criticism and correction of certain individuals or events within a particular play, and how culinary episodes create or highlight that play's celebratory closing which serves to affirm the changes made in the on-stage world.

This dissertation includes a discussion of my critical methodology and of secondary literature that pertains to what the comedies "mean" and to the roles that food and dining play in Greek art and culture, as well as a bibliography of works consulted.
