Senior healthcare coverage in the United States has been studied extensively. However, few studies have explored seniors' behavior concerning purchase of healthcare plans. This study used Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action to examine seniors' beliefs, attitudes, and intentions in relation to their healthcare purchasing decisions.

This study used Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action to examine seniors' beliefs, attitudes, and intentions in relation to their healthcare purchasing decisions.
520 $a Five null hypotheses and 12 subhypotheses addressed these issues. First, selected demographic factors (gender, marital status, ethnicity, education, income, current health status) do not significantly influence seniors' healthcare decisions. Second, the same demographic factors do not significantly influence seniors' beliefs about their healthcare coverage decisions. Third, seniors' beliefs do not significantly influence their intentions about these buying decisions. Fourth, seniors' attitudes do not significantly influence their intentions about these decisions. Fifth, seniors' intentions do not significantly influence their buying behavior about their healthcare coverage decisions.
520 $a The sample for this study was comprised of 113 respondents from two community organizations. Subjects were administered a demographic questionnaire and beliefs, attitudes and intentions surveys.
520 $a Descriptive statistics analyzed demographic characteristics, including current healthcare plan. Inferential procedures included t tests, ANOVA, chi-square, and correlation analyses.
520 $a Results showed that null hypothesis 1 was accepted: neither gender, marital status, ethnicity, education, income, nor current health status significantly influenced seniors' healthcare coverage decisions. Null hypothesis 2 was accepted: for the same six demographic characteristics, none significantly influenced seniors' beliefs about their healthcare coverage decisions. Null hypothesis 3 was rejected: seniors' beliefs were significantly correlated with their intentions about purchase. Null hypothesis 4 was rejected: seniors' attitudes were significantly correlated with their intentions about purchase. Null hypothesis 5 was rejected: seniors' intentions were significantly influenced by their healthcare coverage purchase decisions.
