Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 1996.
This dissertation is a study and translation of the Dharmadharmatavibhaga of Maitreya (third to fourth century C.E.), together with the Vrtti text of Vasubandhu (fourth to fifth century C.E.), an early systemic work of the Yogacara school. According to the Indo-Tibetan tradition, the Dharmadharmatavibhaga is one of five treatises dictated to Asanga by Maitreya. The uniqueness of this text lies in its systematization of the manifold doctrines of the Yogacara under two main headings, "dharma" and "dharmata." What we find therein is one of the earliest attempts to philosophically examine the nature of worldly existence and ultimate reality according to the categories "dharma" and "dharmata," respectively.

The Yogacara teachings arose in the context of Abhidharmika theory and the Mahayana doctrines of emptiness (sunyata) and dependent origination (pratityasamutpada), as expounded by Nagarjuna (second century C.E.). The Yogacara synthesis included a propensity toward theoretization, unlike, for example, Nagarjuna's dialectical argumentation, but in the context of emptiness. What the Yogacara stressed was an analysis of the perceptual sphere as the dependently arisen (pratiyasamutpanna) basis for both delusion (bhranti) and spiritual emancipation (moksa). In the Dharmadharmatavibhaga, we find the locus for the unfolding of the doctrines of emptiness and dependent origination in perception; we also have therein an implicit ontology of immanence and epistemology of transcendence, which function as the possibility and necessity of enlightenment, respectively.

The main body of this dissertation consists of eight chapters, the first three providing the necessary background for the project, including an analysis of the relation between early Madhyamika and Yogacara. The following four chapters analyze the content of the Dharmadharmatavibhaga proper, while the last is an annotated translation of Vasubandhu's Vrtti.
