Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Ohio State University, 1992.
The purpose of this research was to develop a reliable and valid instrument which could be used to assess the relationship between locus of control of reinforcement and environmentally responsible behavior in university undergraduate students. Scores on an inventory of self-reported performance of selected environmental actions, carefully selected from the literature on environmentally responsible behavior and assessed by a panel of judges for their appropriateness to six categories of environmental action-taking, served as the criterion variable. Using seven phases of development and employing the techniques of item-total correlations, factor analysis, regression analysis, discriminant analysis, and inter-item correlations the Environmental Action Internal Control Index (EAICI) was created. Scores on the EAICI served as the predictor variable.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Scores on the EAICI served as the predictor variable.

Scores on the EAICI and the self-report inventory of environmentally responsible behavior were analyzed via a Pearson product-moment correlation and by discriminant analysis techniques. The goal was to (1) determine what correlation existed between scores on the EAICI and the measure of reported behavior; and (2) determine if the EAICI could accurately predict extent of environmentally responsible behavior in individuals.

The following conclusions were drawn: (1) the EAICI displays substantial internal consistency (Cronbach alpha =.92); (2) there is a moderate positive correlation between scores on the EAICI and scores on the self-report inventory of environmentally responsible behavior (r =.33, p

$.
01); and (3) the EAICI successfully discriminated individuals according to the extent of their participation in environmentally responsible behaviors in 82 percent of the cases tested (n = 850).

The results seem to indicate that the EAICI can accurately predict environmentally responsible behavior. Recommendations for future research were presented.
