This phenomenological study was designed to describe and analyze the perspectives of family members who provide care to aphasic stroke survivors. Aphasia is often the result of a stroke, rendering the elder adult dependent upon family in order to remain in the community. Data regarding caregiving in the context of specific disorders remain sparse. How family caregivers view the experience of providing long-term care to an aphasic stroke survivor has not been well explained in the caregiving research literature.

Six long-term family caregivers were interviewed. Their ages ranged from 54 to 82 years, with a mean age of 76 years. The aphasic care receivers ranged from 72 to 82 years with a mean age of 76 years. The duration of caregiving was 2 to 16 years.

Lazarus and Folkman's stress theory was the conceptual framework, which guided the study. The World Health Organization definition of health was the standard assigned to assess the caregivers' well-being. The narratives of this purposive sample of long-term family caregivers provided data about their lived experiences. Analysis of the narratives resulted in themes of stress, appraisal, and coping. Individual differences in the meanings and perceptions of the caregiving burdens were evident. Coping strategies influenced the caregivers' subjective burden. Supporting previous caregiver studies, the current findings suggest that family caregiving cannot be explained solely on the basis of the severity of the burdens associated with caregiving.
