Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2004.
In Iliad 14.214--221, Homer sings of a particular item of women's clothing, an exquisitely patterned k3sto&d13; vi `ma&d12; v , fashioned for Aphrodite by the Graces, a decorative breastband which she lends to Hera as a talisman for facilitating and securing Hera's seduction of Zeus in order to induce his sleep and, hence, a soporific Olympian pause for partiality during the Trojan War. While millennia of deliberations as to the precise nature of this garment have been inconclusive, the leitmotif of its being somehow "magic" or possessing properties for enchantment, has persisted. I shall undertake an exegesis of this intriguing and intricate garment through a linguistic analysis of possible origins for Homer's description, beginning with Linear B, and through a discussion of other ancient texts mentioning the k3sto&d13; vi `ma&d12; v as well an investigation into the fabrics and garments, with their respective terminology and imagery for the textile arts, during the Minoan-Mycenaean and subsequent periods. I shall propose that the mystique of its being "magical" derives from its own nature and particular numen as cloth which Homer describes as poiki&d12; lov ---a quality suggesting varietal internal contrasts of the multicolored, the provocative, and the sensual the process and product which underpin the very word k3sto&d13; v as conjoined with i `ma&d12;v : namely, Embroidery. By examining fragments of extant textiles from antiquity and distinguishing between the usage of poikili&d12; a with reference to in-woven tapestry picture weaving, on the one hand, and embroidery, on the other, I shall suggest the nature of the decoration which Homer describes on this sacred sash. And although the ancient remnants of textiles have been reduced, for the most part, to lost empires and earthworms and temples to the transitive, yet the innately numinous quality of Homer's k3sto&d13; vi `ma&d12; v abides: the ineluctably persuasive and binding power of the stitch itself as Aphrodite---the enduring fastener, the connector, the mender, the never--ending story of Eros/Zeus as muqoplo&d12; kov ---Tale-Weaver.Subjects--Topical Terms:
