Thesis (Ph.D.)--Drew University, 1994.
This dissertation seeks to analyze and evaluate Hans Kung's theology of religions in a historical and thematic manner. It is the first attempt to examine comprehensively Hans Kung's theology of religions. The overall thesis is that in the light of the various Christian approaches to the world's religions (exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism), Hans Kung's theology of religions stands out as one of the most adequate models for retaining the specific identity of Christianity while at the same time advocating a maximum of openness toward the world's religions. Each chapter, however, carries its own thesis statement and conclusion. Chapter one constructs a historical-theological introduction to Hans Kung's theology of religions in the light of his general theological development. There are essentially three broad periods to Kung's theological development: (1) the Ecclesiological Period (1948-1970); (2) the General Theological Period (1970-1982); and (3) the Interreligious Dialogue Period (1982-Present). Chapter two renders transparent the four fundamental components that comprise the foundation and structure of Hans Kung's theology of religions. These components are listed as: (1) the theological component (theological methodology); (2) the philosophical component (the knowledge of God and the religions); (3) the historical component (the study of religions and theology); and (4) the practical component (interreligious dialogue). Chapter three tackles the central problematic of Hans Kung's theology of religions--christology. Here the foundational issues underlying Kung's christology as well as the structure and substance of Kung's christology are uncovered in the light of historical research and classical christology. In addition, Kung's case for the uniqueness of Jesus Christ is explicated in the light of the critique of Christian uniqueness from the pluralistic theology of religions group. Chapter four seeks to set in relief Hans Kung's answers to the question of salvation and the question of truth. Each major section in these chapters is followed by a critical evaluation of the preceding material. A conclusion to this dissertation assesses briefly and tersely the overall merits and deficiencies in Hans Kung's theology of religions.Subjects--Topical Terms:
