This dissertation studies the role played by contradictions and tautologies in the language of mysticism, particularly in the systems of Nicolaus Cusanus and Nagarjuna. The two introductory chapters deal with the main characteristics of mystical language, and with the interplay of what we have called 'mystical intentionality' and 'mystical expectation,' with the aim of placing in its proper perspective the distinction usually made between 'interpretation' and 'mystical experience,' a distinction which we regard as unjustifiable. In the following chapters, using as point of departure the concepts of tautology and contradiction, as understood by Wittgenstein in the Tractatus logico-philosophicus, as well as by Carnap and Ramsey, we study the contradictory and tautological nature of mystical formulae in Neoplatonism and Buddhism.

In the Neoplatonic system of Nicolaus Cusanus we find a progression from a view of the world sub specie paradoxae--in the conception of the coincidentia oppositorum--to a world seen sub specie tautologiae, which is particularly clear in the formulation non-aliud est non aliud quam non-aliud. In the case of Buddhism, we find a parallel development when the contradictory notion of nirvana is replaced by the madhyamika concept of 'emptiness' (sunyata), an emptiness which being itself 'empty' (sunyatasunyata), functions as an all-encompassing tautology.

We believe that the aim of the notions of non-aliud and sunyata is to uncover not an ontological principle, or an 'Absolute,' but the ground, the praesuppositio absoluta, for any possible communication and signification.
