Thesis (M.A.)--Boston College, 2006.
Men's basketball is, today, one of the major economic drivers in the commercialization of college sports. This thesis investigates the strength of the relationship between corporate giving and the ranking of college basketball teams, over a period of thirteen years (1993-2005). Basketball ranking is designated as independent variable, which is discretely correlated with the dependent measures of total corporate giving, corporate cash and security giving, and athletic corporate giving. Besides correlation and time-series analysis, split analysis is employed to highlight any correlational discrepancies between top-ranked and bottom-ranked institutions. The analysis of one hundred sixty-five college and university basketball teams found consistent and significant positive correlations between ranking and giving for most of the thirteen years examined. These results confirm a development which has taken place, especially over the last three decades: college sport events have, over time, more and more morphed from collegiate events into commercial events.
