Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2006.
Multicultural education is commonly taught with focus on the heroes and celebrations of diverse cultures, but these approaches are incomplete and ineffective because they leave out cultural responsiveness. Multicultural education is a practice that includes theories that can help students develop a sense of empathy toward the "other" through approaches that examine issues, problems, and concerns from a variety of cultural perspectives. Multicultural art education centers on these theories while students study and create art based on cultures as the starting point of the lesson. Through such an approach, students are encouraged to develop a sense of empathy that will reach beyond the school walls and into the greater world community. With this in mind, art educators need to consider the many possibilities in the development of a meaningful and responsible antiracial and antidiscriminatory curriculum.
