Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 2006.
The purpose of this investigation was to develop and implement an interdisciplinary training model designed for master's students in speech-language pathology and education, and to examine the model's effects on the educational and learning experiences of students in the treatment group. The participants in this study were female African-American students attending Howard University, ranging in age from 21-30. A pretest-posttest control group design was utilized, with students from each discipline randomly divided and assigned to two groups. The training model was presented as a series of training modules, covering the topics of teaming, collaboration, problem-solving, and the professions in practice. Both groups were pre-and-posttested using the Teamwork-KSA Test measure. Students in the treatment group participated in the interdisciplinary training modules, while students in the control group did not. Following training, the treatment group was also required to complete three Liken rating scales, and a semistructured interview, in order to obtain participant perceptions of the training model.

A significant difference in mean scores between the pretest and posttest measures of the treatment group was found, while no significant difference in mean scores was found between the pretest and posttest measures of the control group. Students in the treatment group performed more strongly on the posttest measure of the Teamwork-KSA Test following training. The Training Program Evaluation Scale revealed students perceived the training model as effective in meeting its objectives. Students who participated in training also rated the interdisciplinary format of the training sessions as beneficial to their graduate education experience, with a recommendation for future training models of this type to be offered within the curriculum.
