This one-year qualitative research project explored how computer technology influences art and design programs in higher education. It involved 37 educators from the Academy of Art University; Art Institute, Los Angeles; Art Center College of Design; California College of the Arts; California Institute of the Arts; Otis College of Art and Design; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles; and Westwood College. The research was performed through face-to-face interviews, class visits, and telephone and email contacts. Educators involved in this research were selected based on their background, expertise, availability, and referral by other interviewees.

520 $a It was discovered that with the ubiquitous application of computer technology, the current reality has become one that is multicultural and pluralistic, dissolving the timeline of history and boundaries of art forms. Moreover, computer technology has opened up new career opportunities and accelerated work processes. It has also induced new ways of creating art and provided novel channels to distribute artworks. Today, interactivity and networking is facile with or without physical presence.
520 $a Predictably, there are costs for such progress. Overdependence upon the tools together with the prescribed rules imposed by the computer may limit artists and designers during their creative process. Besides, technology may cause fragmentation in life and isolation among individuals. Technology, moreover, has indirectly fostered a split between the rich and poor, shaping society in a way that is not entirely supportive of a quality life.
520 $a Educators involved in this research revealed that curricula adjustments and trends have included emphasizing basic computer competency and traditional skills simultaneously, encouraging experimentation and interactivity through new tools, fostering interdisciplinary education, engaging students in the development of new technology, underscoring humanitarian issues, developing art and design leadership and a sense of accountability, and building a complete cyber campus.
520 $a It was concluded that ethical use of computer technology is a social responsibility, and caution and constant re-evaluation of educational practices are crucial. While tools are merely made to facilitate work and communication, artists and designers need to understand the design process, think and judge critically, challenge the established rules, and uphold the value of the human spirit.
