The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree to which life satisfaction in older African Americans is affected by the type and level of activity in which they engage and whether socio-economic status, and/or gender, influences these relationships. In addition, general descriptive data including age, gender, marital status, health, religious affiliation, education, and socioeconomic status were collected on the background characteristics of the participants. These data were analyzed to provide a full account of the seniors as well as to decide the connection between the demographic variables, activity level and life satisfaction.

The sample consisted of 79 African Americans ranging in age from 65 to 85. There were 50 females and 29 males all living in urban areas. The sample was obtained from a variety of organizations catering to elderly African Americans. The data collected on the subjects' education and income levels prior to retirement indicated that a majority of the subjects would be considered at the lower level in terms of socio-economic status.

The findings indicate that higher levels of involvement in activities produce a positive effect on the seniors perceived life satisfaction. There were two types of activities that proved to be important: outgoing activity (such as participation in clubs and self-improvement courses) and religious activities. The findings indicate that the more African American seniors engage in outgoing activities the better they feel about themselves. The findings concerning religious activities suggest that religious affiliations are positively correlated with life satisfaction. The findings also suggest that there are no significant differences between the sexes in terms of activity level. However, there was a slight difference in life satisfaction by gender with males indicating a higher level of life satisfaction. This study seems to indicate that those factors that impact life satisfaction in this group are almost identical to the factors that impact other retired Americans. That is, African Americans seniors, like their Caucasian counterparts, are more satisfied with life if they are more active, healthier, and have greater financial resources. The implications of these findings for programs aimed at elderly African Americans were discussed.
