Given that the existing art curriculum does not adequately address artistic learning in the dynamic cultures of Kenya, this dissertation attempts to investigate, document, and analyze the forms and patterns of traditional art processes and their application in art education across Kenyan schools. The wealth of traditional arts practices have not been integrated into the Western educational model used in Kenya since colonial times. Music, dance, drama, storytelling, body decoration, crafts and accessories are part of one body of cultural knowledge in traditional arts. A new approach to a curriculum designed to combine existing content of Western art methodology with selected processes of traditional arts would engender a collaborative learning experience that will enrich all aspects of educational goals. A curriculum approach drawing on the arts experiences of more than 42 ethnic groups would offer unlimited cultural learning that enriches the knowledge of all Kenyans. The research will employ a variety of data collection methods, including art workshops and interviews with selected pupils, teachers, headmasters, parents, and interested stakeholders from different communities; collection of curricula materials, books and sample lessons, literature reviews and on site observations. The study should in the end enable me to model new strategies in curriculum innovations for rural as well as urban primary school art teachers, and attempt to establish long-term practices in documenting cultural and traditional ways of knowing.
