As the nursing faculty shortage intensifies, administrators are considering methods of improving access to nursing education. E-learning is one concept that will help administrators on both fronts. However, implementation of E-learning requires administrators to understand faculty needs and perceptions. The purpose of the quantitative descriptive survey was to gather data on nursing faculty perceptions of E-learning. The data was collected from 278 nursing faculty in the state of Iowa. Analysis reveals that faculty acknowledge benefits from the use of E-learning. For faculty the benefits include convenience and flexibility and the potential to use that flexibility as a faculty-recruitment tool. For students the flexibility is also a benefit that will assist in reaching rural communities and encouraging professional development in nurses. Another benefit noted for students is the development of computer-related skills. Barriers related to the use of E-learning were also reported. These include lack of face-to-face interactions and increased workload for faculty. Characteristics that were associated with increased E-learning use included personal use of a personal digital assistant (PDA) and training provided by the academic employer on the use of E-learning. There was no significant difference in E-learning use based on mean age or mean years as an educator. Recommendations for practice are offered.
