Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2006.
The focus of this study was to identify the frequencies and trends of learning styles found in the emergency responders population sample. In the dynamically changing, increasingly technical, risky emergency response professions, the training and education of responders are critical to the goal of protecting life and property. Emergency responders may be called at any time to make decisions that have far-reaching impact on the public. It is imperative that their training and education prepare them for such eventualities. In order for proper training and education to occur and to optimize the acquisition of knowledge and skills, trainers and instructors should to know as much as possible about how emergency responders learn. While there are many theories and hypotheses about learning styles none have addressed the emergency responders and their particular learning style commonalities or patterns.

The VARK Preferences instrument was used to gather data that was quantitatively analyzed. The acronym VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities used in learning. This instrument is based on identifying the ways that people prefer information to come to them and the ways they like to deliver their communication. This study examined the preferences of 100 emergency responders who answered the questionnaire. It identified learning styles patterns based on years of service, rank, and education levels. These patterns showed that multi-model (visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic) was the most preferred learning style and kinesthetic second. Knowing emergency responders learning styles preferences will help curriculum developers design curricula that can be used to improve their learning. This knowledge will ultimately help the responder protect the public.

The general public expects and demands that emergency responders be well trained and educated, and able to utilize their knowledge and skills to respond to emergencies, plan, mitigate, and ensure the safety and well being of the general public. To meet these demands the responder must be trained and educated through well designed programs that maximize their learning opportunities. The welfare of the public depends on responders do their jobs, and protect them.
