There is a growing number of students over the age of 24 entering the higher education system. This non-traditional student population is expected to increase significantly in the next several years. Although there is emerging research regarding the non-traditional student, little attention has been paid to the predictive relationship of economic factors, student expectations, selected student demographics and employer tuition funding (as a source of financial aid) and non-traditional student persistence.

The purpose of this research was to identify significant predictors of non-traditional student persistence. It focused on a baccalaureate program, offered in a weekend format, for non-traditional students at a private Southern California institution of higher education (College). The study utilized quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, examine and analyze the data. There were 3 main data sources, 1st being historical statistics compiled and recorded by the College; the 2nd being data from applications of non-traditional College students; and the 3rd being publicly available regional and national unemployment rates.

An analysis of the data showed the following characteristics to be predictors of non-traditional student persistence: (a) enrolling with more transfer units; (b) maintaining a higher GPA; (c) being an African-American student; (d) enrolling when the prior year's high school unemployment rate for high school graduates, less the unemployment rate for college graduates ("differential rate") is higher. The research also identified student expectations at time of application with the number one expectation (74%) being to complete a bachelor's degree.

Predicting persistence is of value to the institution of higher education when planning and implementing academic, social and institutional support strategies. The literature review provided insight into the factors of effective programs designed to ensure student persistence. Based upon the findings of this study and the research that grounded it, policy recommendations are made for Institutions of Higher Education, for Practitioners and for Non-Traditional Students.
